DEMS-NIXUS, short for Data Excellence Management System- Natural Intelligence eXpanded Universe System, is a data governance and data quality platform built around a proprietary linguistic and metasemantic artificial intelligence platform.  The product allows users to interact with it via a natural language interface, including multiple languages and builds a semantic meta model of corporate data. The product assesses the business context in which your data exists and the business requirements that it addresses.

DEMS-NIXUS provides a semantic layer above corporate data sources, whether structured or unstructured. It does not copy data around, but instead allows queries to be generated in the underlying data access language, such as SQL or JavaScript, to the source systems. The product can not only deal with databases and files but also the structure of applications such as SAP and Oracle.

DEMS-NIXUS allows you to manage and govern your data as well as several forms of context that surround that data. This includes what DEMS-NIXUS calls the business context, a glossary of relevant business terms and descriptions. Other types of governed intelligence include domains of excellence, complete with key value indicators, and business requirements. The product will automatically generate queries and scripts that test against your requirements from their natural language descriptions: in other words, their semantics. This is a valuable capability, and a good example of how DEMS-NIXUS leverages linguistics in support of governance.

The results of these queries, as well as a host of other information, is consolidated and presented within a ‘a series of personalised, dynamically created dashboards that can be drilled into and that each display all information related to a particular topic that is relevant to you. For instance, your data stewardship cockpit might display information pertaining to any domains that you are responsible for. A range of cockpits are available, and one of these, the ‘Procurement Excellence’ cockpit (used for monitoring Procurement compliance) is shown in Figure 1. There is also a high-level cockpit that provides an overview of governance within your enterprise. Combined with the built-in mobile view, GDE boasts that this offers you the ability to “govern your entire enterprise from your iPad”. The product can even take the output form other AIs, such as ChatGPT, as a source.

There are a number of points in DEMS-NIXUS’ favour as a solution for data governance. First of all, its focus on business value (such as business context and business requirements) is logical. In addition, the open and accessible nature of the product, as well as the consolidation of governance assets that it provides, make it very suitable as a collaborative environment. Its automation capabilities, and particularly its semantic automation capabilities, are highly advantageous in their own right, but also serve to enhance this collaborative capability even further by allowing business users to focus solely on the business, and to do so using natural language. The semantic graph generated by the platform is particularly helpful for providing a high-level view of your data and intelligence assets and making it much easier to understand how they are connected together. Its ability for users to query the structure of complex data structures such as that within SAP is very useful in itself.
