Sophos is a UK security company, headquartered in Abingdon near Oxford. It was founded in 1987, and grew significantly via a number of acquisitions that expanded its range of capabilities across customers’ different security needs . The company was floated on the LSE in 2015, but subsequently went back into private ownership in early 2020 when it was acquired by US private equity firm Thoma Bravo. In 2023 the company’s revenues exceeded $1 billion.

In early 2025 Sophos finalised its acquisition of Secureworks, an XDR vendor, for $859 million. At the time, the combined company had around 6,000 employees. The acquisition extends the potential MDR market reach for Sophos, which is already considerable (25,000+ customers). With its Taegis Managed XDR solution, Secureworks has a competing market offering to the Sophos MDR technology and services. One major difference in terms of legacy market positioning is that Taegis has been sold mainly to larger customers by Secureworks, whereas the equivalent Sophos positioning was focused mainly on mid-sized enterprises.

Sophos’ pre-deal XDR solution has 44,000+ customers, and across its portfolio Sophos had over 600,000 customers prior to the 2025 deal, all of them sold to by channel partners.
