Functional safety has long been a pressing concern in industrial settings where requirements are high for integrity and availability to prevent failures that could impact health and the environment, such as equipment failures, production outages, destruction of property, injury or fatal accidents. But as operational networks are opened up, attacks against industrial systems, including by nation states, criminals and competitors, are on the rise, with actors looking to steal intellectual property or disrupt production for their own gain. Functional security and cybersecurity must go hand in hand. An environment cannot be safe if it is not secure. Organisations need to take a holistic stance to functional safety and cybersecurity, from threat and risk identification to effective incident response and recovery.
