This paper considers the different ways in which databases may be needed to be deployed within Internet of Things (IoT) environments. This may be at the edge, via gateways and at the centre. In the last case this may involve operational, hybrid operational/analytic and/or pure analytic (data warehousing) environments. Also discussed are the characteristics that are necessary in a database if it is to be embedded in either edge or gateway devices. The advantages of being able to use a single database across this entire IoT landscape are also pointed out. Finally, the capabilities of IBM Informix are compared with the features we have identified as necessary to support IoT environments.
