Understanding the relationships that exist between different data elements is crucial to a number of IT tasks. It is fundamental, for example, whenever you are moving data into a data warehouse or if you are creating a master data management (MDM) hub. In both cases, the implementation will fail if you do not preserve the relevant relationships that were present in the source systems and which also need to be present in the newly deployed system. In addition, it is best practice when migrating data (whether upgrading from one version of an ERP package to the next or moving from database supplier to another or more or less anything else) to migrate business entities rather than mere tables and you need to understand the relationships that exist in order to define those business entities. The same also holds true for data archival. The discovery of data relationships is Exeros’ main raison d’être.
