Analyst Coverage: Philip Howard
Fauna is a relatively recent start-up, founded in 2012 by ex-Twitter staff, which came to market with FaunaDB in 2017. It is backed by VC money and is based in San Francisco, though it has staff located in Europe, Africa and Latin America, as well as the States.
The company targets environments requiring rich internet applications that are based purely in the browser, and irrespective of the vertical. The company has a wide array of users, ranging from on-man band start-ups to large enterprises. Sample use cases include a distributed ledger application, edge computing, identity management (used at NVIDIA), backend support for mobile apps and mainframe augmentation, amongst others.
FaunaDB is a multi-model serverless cloud database, and optionally available as a managed serverless experience. FaunaDB is a multi-cloud system with global regions so that data is pushed closer to locations where the users are. FaunaDB is also available to partners who wish to embed FaunaDB within their service or operate their own FaunaDB based database clouds. However, FaunaDB is not available on-premises.
