The primary market for QlikView is as a business intelligence tool. However, it
is not limited to conventional BI functionality and may also be used for analytic
applications, performance management, scorecard applications with key performance
indicators and, indeed, completely non-BI applications.
From a technical perspective, QlikView differs significantly from conventional
BI tools. In particular, it runs in memory, does not use OLAP cube-based technology
(it uses a patented associative database instead) and can be used in conjunction
with operational data without needing pre-aggregations and the other
prerequisites of conventional BI technology. This may well mean that you do
not need a data mart or warehouse as you would do when using a conventional
approach.
