This report examines the database technology which is available for managing application requirements which are not accommodated adequately by the relational model. While hardly a formal definition, the relational model can – for these purposes – be summarised as the management of information which is essentially alphanumeric in nature and which can be reduced to a number of simple tables each dealing with a particular type of business entity (in other words – a ‘normalised’ model where it is not possible to further simplify the tabular structure).
