Results have been consistent over the previous three editions of this paper and in our latest research we have focused less on re-establishing the same facts and more on trying to identify changes. What has become clear to us, both from the results of our survey and from discussions with both vendors and users, is that times have changed, and the original premise of our surveys is, if not out-of-date, then becoming so. The reasons for this are many but include the requirement to integrate new types of data, the growth in multi-cloud and hybrid environments, the adoption of subscription-based licensing, and the fact that while data integration was historically seen as a largely stand-alone function, this is no longer the case.
