ScyllaDB
Analyst Coverage :
Scylla was founded in 2012 by the creators of KVM Hypervisor to work on OSv (a cloud-based operating system). As result of this work the company was able to improve the performance of databases such as Redis by as much as 60%. However, it couldn’t improve on the performance of Apache Cassandra because of inefficiencies in the way that Cassandra uses hardware resources. Seeing a market opportunity, the company therefore switched focus to redeveloping Cassandra from scratch, in 2014, releasing what is now ScyllaDB in 2016.
Scylla has offices in the United States and Israel but has developers in a variety of other countries. The company is backed by venture capital. The company has technical partnerships with vendors such as IBM and Oracle, both of which also use the product. The company uses both a direct sales model and goes to market with partners such as Samsung (in the Far East).
