Alation was founded in 2012, with its headquarters in Redwood City, California, near San Francisco airport. It launched its first software product, Alation Data Catalog, in 2015. By September 2022 it had achieved over $100 million of annual recurring revenue. At the time of writing, it has nearly 800 employees and over 500 enterprise customers around the world, including Cisco, Nasdaq, Pfizer, Salesforce, and Discover. The company is privately held. It has had several rounds of venture capital investment from a number of investors including Riverwood Capital, Dell Technologies Capital, Costanoa Ventures, Databrick Ventures, Sapphire Ventures, and Union Grove. Its Series E financing round raised $123 million in September 2022 at a valuation of over $1.7 billion.
